Bina: Not to beat a dead horse, pardon the pun. those that have the rock hard commitments to those two passions are NOT chameleons. Gandhi was one such: and we have read how his wife and family suffered. In my experience I knew Radhakrishnan, and used to hear family gossip that has been made public by his late son, Gopal's biography of his father. But R was a man of strong beliefs and apparently strong passions. One of the titans of India up there with Nehru and Gandhi.
However, I take your point that strong burning passions that do not include family and friends can have heart rending results.

when one has 2 burning passions
art and championing for human rights issues
these two eat up all the energy
lvg v little to expend on other relations
am not saying they do not love
they do- but sort of in a lukewarm way
and when it is too late
then self-flagellate in remorse

I have met a lot of gifted people in my life: Despite their mercurial nature, they do (or rather the one's I knew, had)hard rock beliefs and did not sway with the wind. But I can understand a genius like Shelley or Byron swaying with the thought or the passion of the moment is understandable.

usually v. gifted people give their all to their craft
n pay lip service to other relationships
that was my intent when i wrote this one
they do hv hearts but our consumed by their creativity

Bina:

Being a chameleon, to live for the moment
To please others, and be life of the party
Fleetingly happy, for the moment bouyant
But shallow inside, without hardrock belief
And a pliable conscience that is ever so dormant

Such a person, is an object of pity, not envy
He will not have love that lasts a lifetime
What's worse he will never miss it !
As love is now and forever, a two way street
He will lack friendships that come from deep inside
And thrive on the casual, the ephemeral, without any pride
Born out of the bottle, the flesh and the immediate treat

Not friendships of growing affection and loves that abide.
