Dear Bina,

This question has different answers from different philosophers and men of spirituality.Valluvar the Tamil poet/philosopher said   " Death is like sleeping; Life is like awakening from the sleep "  - Cycle theory.

Adi Sankara  : Jeevatma ( we ) merges with Paramatma . ( supreme ) - Theory of Advaita.- non dualism.

Ramanuja  Acharya : It is a conditional merger between Jeevatma and Paramatma keeping their distinct qualities separate - theory of Vishisdatvaitha.- conditional dualism.

Madva Acharya : Jeevatma can never merge with Paramatma. They are two different things - Dualism.

All three above are the greatest of all time great thinkers, scholars and philosophers who lived between 7th and 10th century AD established  huge following of their own with their own mutts to propagate and establish their theories and interpretation of Upanishads and are considered fathers of modern Hinduism.

What Thirumandirar another Tamil philosopher said appeals to me : " those who knew the secret never told the rest; those who explained never knew the truth"

The fact is Life is only for the living

It is a mystery and God wants it to be mystery which will never be answered.

Ravi.

rajee
u have all valid qs
this is a fascinating subject
to me death is a new beginning but w progression spiritually from previous one-
it is a journey towards the ultimate goal of nirvana/moksh or whatever u choose to call it- it is a physical change of clothes(body) but the thought- spirit soul continues from where it left off
that is my belief

Dear Bina gupta,
you have defined this TERM so well, how can one question your statement? You have used all the adjectives, superlatives and expletives one can find to define it. But you question remains eternal. WHAT IS IT?
Depends on what is your spiritual beliefs? Do you believe in the LIFE AFTER DEATH? do you believe in the KARMIC THEORY? Do you think time is CYCLIC?
Death is a physical phenomenon--it is related to your physical existence. The moment your physical existence ends, the phenomenon of DEATH overtakes. But what about your spiritual and intellectual existence. NO ONE CAN KILL YOUR THOUGHTS. This is the point. How do we define SPIRITUAL DEATH? What is being IMMORTAL? Regards. Rajee.
